Laser engraving uses focused laser beams to create permanent marks, logos, serial numbers, and decorative patterns on plastic surfaces. This non-contact process offers exceptional precision, flexibility, and repeatability for both functional marking and aesthetic enhancement.

Laser Types

CO2 lasers (10.6μm wavelength) work well for organic materials and some plastics. Fiber lasers (1.06μm) excel at marking engineered plastics and create high-contrast marks without material removal. UV lasers (355nm) enable cold marking on heat-sensitive plastics with minimal thermal effect.

Marking Techniques

  • Engraving: Material removal to create recessed marks
  • Ablation: Removing surface coatings to reveal substrate
  • Foaming: Creating raised marks through gas formation
  • Carbonization: Dark marks on light-colored plastics
  • Bleaching: Light marks on dark materials

Applications

Laser engraving serves diverse needs including permanent product identification, regulatory compliance marking (UL, CE), sequential numbering, barcode and DataMatrix codes, brand logos, control panel legends, and decorative patterns. The permanence makes it ideal for traceability and anti-counterfeiting.

Material Considerations

Different plastics respond uniquely to laser marking. ABS, polycarbonate, and acrylic mark readily. Polyolefins (PP, PE) often require additives for satisfactory contrast. Material formulation, colorants, and fillers all affect mark quality and should be tested before production.
